National MLK Day of Service is Monday. Schools and Offices will be closed.

National MLK Day of Service is Monday. Schools and Offices will be closed. Legislation signed in 1983 marked the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” The MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” To find an MLK volunteer opportunity near you, go to http://bit.ly/MLK-Day-Volunteer.

Schools Boards shape a child's education. Have you ever considered running?

Schools Boards shape a child's education. Have you ever considered running? School Board Members make up the largest body of elected officials in the USA. They set the policies for our elementary, middle and high schools; are active in recognition, special events and advocacy efforts; and help us address the impact of growth in our community. Members meet once a month in sessions that are open to the public. The agenda can range from an upbeat report about the innovative programs happening in our schools, to provocative discussions with community members where important decisions are made. Candidates must be registered with the New Castle County Board of Elections by March 1, 2019 to appear on the May 14 ballot. This is a 5-year, unpaid position. To run, you must be at least 18-years old, a citizen of the USA and Delaware, and a resident of our district. For more on eligibility open this story.
